This is a poor design. I was excited to see 4 cutting strings, but in order to replace the lines you must take it apart and fit the strings into the little spaces. If they fit without using tools it might have been worth the time to replace them. Spend your money elsewhere.

The cutting line is made up of 4 pieces, each about 9" long. Each are threaded through a central hub so that eight 3" lines stick out from under the weedeater. The hub spins & the lines cut the grass. When they break off they have to be replaced. The replacement is either to buy the line, and cut each piece & thread them through the hub or buy additional hubs. Since they break when they hit anything it would take forever to replace the line or be expensive to replace the hub.

I returned it to Amazon who refunded my money without any problem.

Would NOT recommend buying this unit!!

Unless you enjoy frustration and buying things that don't work, don't get this trimmer, even if someone gives it to you for free! Poorly designed. Even with a brand new company wound spool it wouldn't feed properly. The only satisfaction I received from this trimmer was when I took my ax to it after spending an hour trying to trim one easy stretch of the side of my house (I knew I couldn't live with myself if I sold it cheap at a yard sale or gave it to someone). Complete garbage. Look elsewhere--it would be easier to do it by hand with shears.

I fell pray to the "automatic feed" idea. It NEVER worked right, breaking the line every 30 seconds, loosing the line inside the head constantly, and if it did feed, it would wrap itself around the feed head and jamb. This is a GRADE "A" LOSER.

i haven't had the issues the other reviewers have. in fact, i found this much easier to use than other weed whackers. for the $35 i spent 3 years ago, this little machine has done well for me. I've taken down 24"- 36" grass and weeds with no issue. this is not a tool for a heavy duty job, but for someone with a smaller yard, it does just fine. only once have i had to fix the trim line. my only gripe is the plug for the cord could be tighter, or have a better "stay put" system.

This trimmer functioned exactly twice for me. While the " no bump " feature sounded like a good option, it was really slow to advance the string. But I was getting a good cut, so I kept going. That is until the machine completely stopped. No amount of cleaning, or rewinding the string

could bring this thing back to life. I never even used up the spool of string which came with the trimmer. Fortunately, I have been offered a full refund which I will take advantage of. Don't waste your time with this trimmer. Sadly this lack of quality seems all too prevalent with Black & Decker home products. So why 2 stars ?? Well, when it worked it did the job.

My last Black & Decker lawn trimmer lasted about five years before it burned out. I decided to get a more powerful one which is this 4.2 amp trimmer/edger. To use as an edger you push a button and turn the trimmer end vertical. It is not very impressive as an edger, unless you have little grass growing over edge of driveway or sidewalk and do it weekly. A better choice for a edger is a bladed one.

Due to a physical problem a few years ago, I had professionals mow & trim lawn. So, I used the new B&D trimmer rarely. Yesterday I decided to trim some things and when a tiny vine got wrapped around the trimmer head, it burned out. I had not even used one full head of line! It cost $60.00 at Sears and had been used less than a dozen times. A new motor costs $38.00 online for the part. I am now thinking about switching to a 4 cycle motor unit with a cultivator attachment.

My experience with B&D lawn products is not good. However, I have a good B&D drill and a sabre saw that have lasted many years (also, don't use them a often).

My advice: If you get an trimmer that uses a 120V electric cord you pull around, get the most powerful motor you can find. For me, 4.2 amps isn't enough power, although it seems powerful when you are using it. B&D figured that out too: their new units have 40% more power...they are 7 amps! That advice might be useful if buying a cordless one: get the most powerful one, if you can afford it.

The wheel attachment broke on first use. The spool for line is small and doesn't hold much line so had to stop almost every other time I used it and respool more line. The spool broke within one season of normal use and parts do not appear to be available to replace the spool assembly in total, and the cost of the parts that are available are almost as much as the original cost of the unit. The only thing I really loved about the unit is how easy it is to convert from trimming to edging with the push of one button on the trigger assembly and knob adjust on the grip.

I brought this trimmer thinking it is a 0.08" line. It was trimming and edging well but when the original lines were finished and needed replacement, this was when the problem started. I used the 0.08 line and every time I started the trimmer, the lines just released without control. This problem did not resolve after I re-check the manual and repeat the steps several times. I called Troy-Bilt and the tech told me that the box and the manual were mis-printed (that was really unacceptable), the trimmer needs a 0.065 line due to the new mechanism requires the inertia of the 0.065 line (this is what he told me). I went back and brought the 0.065 line and the same problem happened again. I have had enough of it and returned it back to the store.



I have to say I am a handy guy and have put things together, including, furniture, ceiling fans, home theater, etc. This trimmer really get me working and I tried to problem solve but without a solution. If I can give no start to write this review, I will give no star, but that does not work and I have to give this trimmer 1 big star for being a low price trimmer+ edger. Don't waste money with this trimmer and look for other better model in a different brand.

Broke in less than 5 minutes. ALL plastic. I have gone back to using out 15 year old cheapo Black & Decker unit. It has no edger to it's weed eater function like this one does, but nothing has broke either!



ONLY good part? The manufacturer refunded our money in full. Told me to just throw this one away. At least the company had a touch of class in customer service. STUNNED they would make such a horribly under engineered product however. I only made it about 5 feet edging when pieces flew everywhere.....BEWARE!

I selected this one because it has 2 cutting strings (BIG plus) and because of the edging wheel over other brands/models. It cuts very well, but is a bit awkward for me to use (I'm left handed).



I took the little edging wheel off after a couple of uses as I felt it was more trouble than it was worth. The trimmer pivots at the trigger handle for edging; this means that you have to pull the shaft handle around before you can use it (rather than pivoting at the power head). There is a length adjustment, which I love as I'm 6'6" tall and most trimmers force me to walk bent over to use.



The main improvement this machine needs is a simpler, working string advance. At best it very flimsy. And should you have the misfortune to break a line off at the spool, well I hope you have 3 hands. You have to get the line out of the inside feed ring (which feeds from the top and bottom at the same time), through 2 holes on the spinning head (you see you need one hand to hold each string sticking out in place and the third hand can then easily feed the strings through the holes in the external head) before you push it back on the trimmer. It's pretty much a nightmare, but with practice and LOTS of patience evidently I got the swing of it.



I would have liked to give these unit 3.5 stars, for power, adjustability and that so far it's been rugged enough to stand up the uses I've put it through. But I've only given it 3 because of the really BAD line feed system.

This is really an excellent light duty chain saw that I have owned for several years now. I just lopped a few branches off my neighbor's messy magnolia tree (4" to 5" thick branches) last week and used it on some 1" to 2" inch thick ground branches on some bushes in front of my house this morning. (SEE PHOTO). A lot of people review a product a few days after they get it. That's ok but this review comes after several years of ownership and not a new chain on the saw. The Remington Branch Wizard 6" 6 Amp Pole Saw does a great job on bush branches, fruit tree branches and small to medium tree branches. However if you have a lot of heavy duty thick branch type work I would recommend a heavier saw.

I trim the trees at the side of my house once every 3-4 years. I went online shopping for a hedge trimmer and found this to be the cheapest. I trusted Amazon.com's decision in putting this product among its merchandize even though it is being sold by another vendor. I received it on time, immediate put it to work and noticed that I need to stop trimming every 5 minutes because the blades which are rubbing the plastic casing causes the plastic to start melting. It is cheap because it is built cheap but it does the job as long as you give it time to cool down every 5 minutes.

This hedger is straight from China, it looks cheap, even the plastic is cheap looking, not solid like other brands. It does work really well however! It seems to be powerful enough and 22 inches is a nice size. The handle, as mentioned in other posts, seems really cheap, just don't overtighten the two supplied cap screws and perhaps it won't break. I got this at a really low price and it was worth it so my advice would be if it is really on sale then go for it, otherwise I would buy something with a little more quality.

Ordered one trimmer with credit card, and was billed for two. Called at once. They promised to send a return authorization number & label right away. Said they would immediately refund the extra amount. Ad stated "Do not return without authorization."



Many phone calls later, each with assurances of sending return authorization & refund, it never occurred.







BEWARE - this is a small time outfit with no scruples. Each time I call I receive the usual "all our operators are busy...etc." but the same person always answers & I always get the same supervisor. After several calls requesting the promised return authorization & shipping label, they refused to allow me to speak to a supervisor - "Not available."



Their ad states "Buy direct from manufacturer!" BUT, the product is made in China and company (for return authorization) is in Carolina. Product is drop shipped drom Connecticut.
