Bought this Remington 24" dual action in November 2008. After three hedge and ornamental tree trimmings this spring the product does not work anymore. The dual trim action runs but any soft branch will not be cut anymore. It is useless. Called the 1 800 line attached to the trimmer and was referred to another LD number where a security guard answered and apologized that DESA is out of business. If I knew which part I needed he could look for it in the warehouse but all tool products under Remington sold by DESA are out of luck to get warranty repair or refund.Remington 24-Inch Dual Action Titanium Coated Bar 5 AMP Motor 3/4-Inch Cut 180 Degree Rotating Handle Electric Hedge Trimmer #HT5024PHT

"Very good but with some negative features..." 2008-06-22
By D. Williams (West Seneca, N.Y.)
I have privet hedges 200 feet long, over 5 feet high and 4 feet wide. Takes up to an hour to trim them about every two weeks. First time I bought a hedge trimmer other than a Black and Decker since 1973. But got tired of replacing them every few years after the motor burns out. So I bought this Remmington. The Good: the blades are sharp and cuts both ways effortlessly, the motor powerful enough to cut some thicker branches, and the swivel head makes it easy for the vertical cuts. The Bad: it is much heavier than the B&D, and the electrical cord should be replaced with a direct plug because it sometimes gets in the way. Those are minor things to overcome but the real problem is the damn thing does not stay on unless BOTH the hand guard AND trigger are held in. I used hockey stick tape to hold the hand guard together. That fixed part of the problem but the trigger is sensitive the and the trimmer shuts on and off if you change any pressure on the trigger. The trigger is too sensitive. Remmington would do well to copy the B&D and use a trigger lock with a quick release safety switch.

this unit is well balanced, powerful and easy to use. Its 24 inch blade gives good reach and the adjustable position handle lets you trim in any direction. It cuts through 3/4 inch limbs on my leland cypress trees easily. I am well satisfied with it and would recommend it it .

Don't think you're man or woman enough to handle a piece of power equipment? Fear no more. Black & Decker's bump feed string trimmer is a great buy for even the beginning gardener who needs to whack weeds regularly. Its 3-1/2 amp motor munches medium-to-thick weeds with precision and ease, even when weeds are a tangled web. The 12-inch cutting path and 10,000 rpm get the job done fast. This Black & Decker is easy to maneuver and can be used to trim weeds in some hard-to-reach places where other trimmers fail. It will also challenge thicker weeds, but watch out for vines, which can get tangled up above the cutting spool. To feed the spool, simply tap the trimmer against the ground.

Black & Decker definitely keeps the consumer in mind by providing comfort with an adjustable, textured top handle for firm gripping and maximum control. This string trimmer is not too heavy, either; weighing about 5 pounds, it's a good fit, even for smaller gardeners. You may start to feel a light vibration in your hands after a long trimming job, but it's minimal. This Black & Decker model can be used regularly and doubles as an edger. The Groom 'n' Edge button rotates the trimmer head 180 degrees to convert the trimmer to an edger and back again. In seconds, you can turn the head, and you'll hear the snap when it's in place. An edge guide provides precise trimming and edging around sidewalks and driveways and does a good job of keeping you at a safe distance from rocks or even the side of your deck or house.

This string trimmer, as well as most other electric trimmers, is best suited for small yards that are accessible with extension cords. Because electric trimmers are generally lighter and more comfortable, they are easy to handle. If you're looking to whack unruly weeds on your otherwise well-maintained yard, this electric trimmer is a less-powerful yet long-lasting alternative to more expensive gas-powered trimmers. Be sure to wear hand, eye, and foot protection when operating any trimmer. A 30-day no-risk satisfaction guarantee and full two-year warranty are included.

"Flimsy. Lasted through only four trimmings." 2009-07-19
By Brainstorm
This worked quite well the first four times I used it.

Like most string trimmers, you frequently need to take the spool off and rewind the line. But before the "new had worn off" the trimmer, the spool got stuck. The bottom would no longer push in to tap out more line and the spool would not come off the trimmer without a great deal of force. I finally was able to remove the spool; although the spring appeared to be fine, the tapping action no longer worked to feed the line.

The price of this unit is low, but I still expected it to last longer than this. I did not get my money's worth.

 "Pretty Good" 2009-05-24
By D. Jameson (Los Angeles, CA USA)
I've had one of these for five years. It is certainly powerful enough for my small, suburban yard that is within reach of a 50' extension cord, and I have never thought about the weight (that being a good thing). The power is enough that I do not wear sandals, and I do wear safety glasses (a cool (not dorky?) looking DeWalt tinted/UV pair I picked up as an Amazon cart filler). I'd say the durability is good as I am in the class that while I don't abuse my tools, I don't baby them either; I put them to the task.

I can see from the picture that B&D has fixed the main problem I have with mine (it has the shorter edge guide with the mount that breaks). I had had it with that edge guide, so I bought a same-priced Craftsman. I tried the Craftsman for 20 min. I spent more time re-starting the string than trimming (I am definitely returning it; it's heavier, too). So I decided to take another stab at fixing my B&D ST4000, and I finally came up with a good fix (I'll try posting a customer image). I imagine I'll get a few more good years out of it.

We are extremely pleased with our Black and Decker 12-inch electric bump feed string trimmer and edger. We had purchased one of the new automatic feed trimmers in the spring from Wal-Mart and it just feeds through string like mad! It was a disaster. We couldn't find any of the bump styles in Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Home Depot, but thanks to Amazon, we were able to purchase a new bump trimmer. So, stock up everyone - you'll really hate those automatic trimmers!!!!!

By Rusty (CA)
This is a light weight weed whacker that works pretty well, until you have to mess with the spool. It is just too difficult to replace the spool due to a design flaw (the string itself gets in the way of the spool). It does get bogged down when the weed is dense, but the positive is that it gets very close to the spot you want to whack.

Decided to do my own lawn work so I bought this , an electric mower and other stuff, it wasn't too hard to set up,the first time I used it, it was great, the next time I used it, it started off well then I smelt burning, smoke came out of the casing and I decided I'd better quit before it exploded or something. I called amazon and they promised a refund. I heard B&D were good, so I am hoping this is just a one-off. I wish the instructions were clearer too, like what do you do with the lengthening spool, trim it off ? leave it?

 "Cuts Like Warm Butter!" 2008-06-01
By Scott W. Swigart (Ravenna, OH U.S.A.)
I wanted a powerful hedge trimmer and boy is this one powerful! I cut hedges in about half and hour. Usually it would take me at least an hour an a half. The saftey features are great. You MUST have one hand on the handle and one on the support grip to activate the motor. Cutting thick limbs up to the size of 1/4 in was a breeze. Due to the speed of the cutting blades, just make multiple passes over the part you have already trimmed on top and it's 'mulched' enough that you don't even have to rake that part up! The only drawback was it is a little heavier than my last trimmer but that is due to the increased size and POWER of the motor. Wonderful trimmer.

Bottom blade broke after about 10 uses. No, I did not try to cut a fence. Called Wrox customer service (mis-nomer, should be non-service). First they told me they could send me a new blade, then they told me management would have to ok and they would call me back within 24 hours. They did not call back. So, I called again, they tried to sell me the blade for about $30.00 with shipping, when I asked about warranty, the person at Wrox customer non-service said Amazon would cover the warranty, since I bought from Amazon. This is BS. So, the hedgetrimmers are in the trash, I will never buy another Wrox product and I advise you to be very careful if you are considering buying this one.

By Mick G. (Texas, United States)
I just ordered and received my Worx 24-Inch 4 Amp Electric Hedge Trimmer #WG203, and I've already used it a couple of times. I am totally satisfied with its performance. It sailed through the smaller shrubs. I had neglected some larger shrubs at the side and back or the house, but it easily cut through some tough branches that were over 1/2". Just to test it, I also cut a couple of branches that measured around 3/4", however something that large really needs to be sawed or cut with pruning shears. The unit is easy to handle and fairly light for its size. I shopped around locally and on the internet and this was by far the best deal price-wise also.

This is an excellent and safe electric hedge trimmer which cuts "old" hedges cleanly and with little effort. The assembly was simple. The blade guard is a nice plus to keep the blade sharp bouncing in the garden cart. The extendable handle is also a plus for reaching without a ladder.

A great product at a very fair price send Amazon Prime is hard to beat!

"Great battery - good motor - fairly poor design" 2009-07-06
By Laurence A. Bates (MI USA)
I love the battery on this trimmer and the motor is quite strong for a cordless. I wish that Troy-bilt would get its act together and release the other garden products that were listed on the box, especially the chain saw. As others have found the trigger switch is useless. I had to rig up something that would keep it pressed for me but allow me to switch off for the frequent hand feeds of the trimming cord. I think that it only feeds when you first turn on the unit but that doesn't work if you want to do a continuous stretch like I do. I would also have liked to see the unit have an adjustable tilt head like the Craftsman and Black and Decker do. I still value the Troy-bilt trimmer for its new age battery but the overall system is quite poorly designed.

 "oh my aching hands" 2009-05-24
By Longshank (Maine/usa)
I purchased a tb57 today, and was impressed with how quickly it can go to work out of the box. In 4 hours the battery was fully charged. Set up was quick and easy....i did not even look at the instructions. Upon testing it became quickly apparent that the unit does not telescope out far enough, requiring me to stoop over to "get er done". Then....after about 15 mins it became painfully apparent that the trigger is way too stiff. My fingers were cramping up....i had to switch hands constantly to allow my fingers to recouperate. After about 45 min i was more exausted than if i had used my heavier gas powered trimmer. The gas trimmer is long enough & makes a clean cut in 1-2 passes.... with the tb57 you must make 5-7 passess while somewhat hunched over to get the same results. Yes it is powerfull enough.....but just barely....so it takes longer to get the job done & with more effort. So.... on one hand you get a hassle free start up....little noise and no smelly fumes....on the other you get a poorly designed unit that will make you work harder than need be & curse the idiots that allowed such a product into the market with obvious flaws. Another positive point is the battery and charger....they seem high quality and work well.....the battery has a button you can push to see how much of a charge is left. After finishing the yard i stll had 3/4 of a charge left, not bad at all. If they made it a bit longer and fine tuned the trigger....this would be a great product worthy of 5 stars....but they rushed it and as a result it works, but kinda sucks....thanks guys at Troy Biilt...YOU BLEW iT !! If you have a small yard...this may work out well for you...but to those with larger areas to maintain i would say you would be better off finding a more suitable alternative.

ADD NOTE - Ok, i want to update this evaluation as i have spent more time with it and i want to clarify a few points. As far as the power goes, it IS strong enough to cut most weeds you will encounter. It just takes a little longer to do it than with a gas trimmer. And it IS great to be able to "grab and go"...i absolutely love the lithium ion battery and charger. It charges relatively quick and holds a rather large charge, giving you roughly 2 hrs use. And it will not develope a memory so you can re-charge at any point. It IS so nice to not have to mess with gas & oil. The TB57 is an instant action accessory that is ready when you are.

The spools are quick and easy to change, although....the spool is smaller than my gas trimmer so i will end up changing the spool more frequently.

I duct taped down the trigger safety eliminating that nuisance, so it is a little easier to use in that regard. The more i use it, the more i like it. I think having two trimemrs is the way to go. A gas one for the spring tough stuff....and an electric one for weekly trimming. Because it is a "hassle free" system, i find myself trimming more often & my lawn looks better for it. in fact, i think i will likely use it today. The TB57 has earned my respect and a place in my arsenal of weed whacking weapons.

"Good light trimmer for short people" 2009-05-16
By TheDog (Atlanta, GA)
Got this at Lowe's for $170 after trying out a much larger and seemingly nicer Ryobi 4 stroke gas mower from Home Depot that didn't work (I assume is was just a faulty one but...). Assembled it in about 15 minutes and as other posters have said, it's for short people. I'm 5' 8" and I find myself crouching down in certain tough spots.

The nice thing about it is that it doesn't have that loud motor going, it's light and when I trim I tuck the battery end under an armpit and trim away.

I wouldn't recommend this for edging or heavy duty stuff. It's good, but not overly powerful.

I think as long as you know what you're getting into, you'll like it. It's nice to just plug in a battery and go.

 "Decent battery powered trimmer" 2009-05-10
By Busy Daddy/Realtor (Virginia)
I bought this trimmer because I was looking for an easier to use replacement for my old gas powered trimmer. I live on a large, corner lot in the city, so I have a lot of trimming to do. (sidewalks, driveway, patio, fence, around flower beds and more)

I wanted to switch to a battery powered trimmer, but I was afraid of running out of juice before the job was done. That is why I chose this 20 volt lithium model, as I had more faith in the extra power and lithium battery. I'm glad I chose this over competing models with 18 volt, ni-cad batteries, as this one barely has enough juice to finish my Saturday trimming needs on one charge, but that's all I need.

Pros:

1) Much lighter and easier to start than a gas powered model

2) Quieter and more environmentaly friendly than gas models

3) Battery is replaceable, unlike a previous reviewer stated

4) Self-feeding trimmer line, unlike my old model's string inserts

5) Other lawn tools available that use same battery

Cons:

1) Length, while adjustable, can cause back strain for taller (6"+) people

2) Self-feed line, at times, requires manual use of release button

3) Haven't seen pre-wound replacement spools yet (must wind my own)

4) Haven't seen other 20 volt tools in stores, yet

5) Kinda pricey, if you don't need the extra power like I do

Bottom line: This trimmer has the power I need to get the job done without the overkill of my old gas-powered trimmer.

 "ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!" 2009-07-08
By CMC (Tennessee)
The WORX product is alright, although the mower arrived with minor damage (poor packaging). The customer service is the worst I've ever dealt with.

After purchasing my WORX mower and grass trimmer through Amazon, I eventually needed to purchase more trimmer spools and opted for the "free" spools program (paying only shipping) offered directly from WORX customer service. In the same order, I also purchased a device from them that allows you to store the grass trimmer and it's battery on the wall of your garage.

After being charged as expected, two weeks past with no product. I contacted their customer service and was informed both products (spools and trimmer device) were on back-order but would ship in 24 to 48 hours. After another week passed, I called again and was transferred to a supervisor who sounded like he was reading from a script. He admitted the spools had not been on back-order but could not explain why I was lied to previously. He could not tell me when my order would ship saying that it was "in process". He then offered a to wave the shipping cost as though that would fix not being able to use my $100 WORX grass trimmer without the spools they sell. This supervisor then assured me he would forward my "case" to upper management and I would receive a call within the 72 business hours. It's been eight days and I've not received a call. It's been over 4 weeks since I placed the order.

Though it's for a small amount of money (less than $25), WORX customer service has essentially stolen my money and falsely advertised in selling me a product I can't obtain and they won't (or as this supervisor said to me, he "can't") tell me why!

I assume others are receiving the items they purchase from WORX. I have no idea why they can't solve my issue. I'm sincerely amazed at the incompetence and inability of this company's customer service and therefore highly recommend all consumers consider purchasing lawn products from one of WORX's competitors instead (try Black and Decker). If this is any example of how WORX is willing to do business then they deserve to go out of business. Buyer beware.

 "Good Power, Cheap String" 2008-08-09

Used the Trimmer a couple times now.

As a Trimmer it worked fine, no problems. When I changed it to an edger, the string in the trimmer would not stay feed out. The string kept getting cut down. Its cheap. So, I replaced the string with a commerical grade string that is thicker and now it works OK. If you use a thicker string, you might need to drill a bigger hole in the reel string hole.

The instructions are not that great, but you should be able to figure out how to use it. I could not find anyone who sells this locally, so I purchase from Amazon.

I got it on Friday, just in time for working in the yard over the weekend.

When I first removed it from the box I noted that this thing was really heavy.. and all the weight is at the working head. It makes it hard to hold off the ground, and it eats the strin like crazy... using it as an edger is a waste of time.. I had to stop every 3-4 feet and let out more string.. now I know that edging sidewalks and driveways can be hard on string... but this one is not like any that I have ever used. The handle is not long enough. Even with the guard inplace I was still getting hit with debris. It does not put the user far enough away from the work end of this thing. I'll be looking for a replacement soon.... and this one will be on a table in a yard sale.
