I bought this at walmart to supplement my cordless trimmer as I thought it would be stronger for thorough weed-eating. To my surprise after a small amount of using it it started smoking. I have a very small yard and i can't even do part of it without this trimmer failing. I have only tried to use it twice and it is a piece of garbage like most of Black and Decker products!

I bought this trimmer 2 or 3 summers ago.
It did the job fine out of the box but I noticed the trimming string broke off a lot and essentially littered my yard with little bits of colored plastic. I decided that was exactly NOT what I was trying to get done in the yard whenever I was doing yard work so I switched over to the HD Gator blade attachment for electric trimmers.
This solved the litter problem and increased the cutting capacity of the trimmer tremendously. I actually enjoyed doing the weed whacking every other week with the B&D Grass Hog outfit with the aftermarket blades.
But the blades introduced another serious problem: breakage, of both the Gator blade attachment, and, today in a thoroughly noxious cloud of green smoke, the trimmer.
The Gator blade attachment is the only blade-type one on the market that's available for the B&D trimmer. Unfortunately, it's not well designed (see my review of that item) and is subject to breaking when a root is accidentally hit. In fact, in the two+ summers I've used this trimmer I've broken the blade attachment (the heavy plastic black central piece) three times! (Wear boots - or be very, very careful where you swing the head if you use this head.)
And after the last time the head broke the trimmer developed a bit of a shudder and some smoking. I took the entire trimmer apart but couldn't find anything broken so I reassembled it and hoped for the best.
To make a long story a little shorter: I should have taken the trimmer to a pro for a repair and I shouldn't have used the blade attachment.
Of course those steps would have made my $80 trimmer a $130+ trimmer that was relegated to trimming just a few unsightly blades of grass along the edge of my walks (I can do that with a scissors and with no littering of little plastic bits all over the place!).
I guess this is just one of those things that's a relatively cheap disposable plastic tool. I hate that I practice this sort of use & trash economics but until B&D makes an electric trimmer with a stronger motor/driveshaft and Gator makes ROUND (instead of oval) blade heads I guess I'll be continuing to pair these parts and buying anew every couple years or so (and at the new price of $50+ for the trimmer I'll be a little less unhappy about it, too).
I wouldn't necessarily shy away from getting this trimmer. Just expect it to give up the ghost in a couple years or so if you push it to near-gas-trimmer levels of work.

I'm only giving this unit a three star rating out of five because I've already had a few issues after the first use. The Grass Hog looks fairly easy to assemble, but the parts were a bit too tight to assemble without the assistance of a pair of pliers. I was a bit miffed that a cord was not included with the unit. It does include a small spool of line that is pre-installed.
This model works much better than the cordless Black & Decker trimmer I previously had, but it eats line like it's tissue paper. I really put it to the test since we have tough grass in this area and have had a lot of rain lately (so the grass grows like crazy over the edges of the drive and sidewalk). I was very disappointed at how often the line needed to be re-threaded, however. I was hoping to be able to just plug it in and edge uninterrupted. Instead, I had to unplug the unit and re-thread the line every 5 minutes. I haven't even done half of the edging in the front yard, and I'm nearly out of line on the small spool that was included with the trimmer. The areas I did edge look just great! When the line isn't catching, this thing cuts through tough grass like butter.
I would suggest purchasing a long extension cord and a few extra spools of line when you purchase this unit. It will save you some annoyance if you figure those items into the cost of the unit and have them handy before you're first use..

I recently bought this model after my previous B&D trimmer gave up the ghost. Although the previous model had occasionally failed to feed string automatically, by and large, it had worked quite well. Not so with the new model. Two strings mean less capacity and THEY DO NOT FEED. Not automatically, not reliably, mostly not at all. Check out the reviews anywhere else for ANY of the current auto feed models, they just don't work. You have no recourse but to open up the spool and feed it out by hand every time it gets too short to use. I went with the only 'bump' model left on the market and CR's second top choice. (They got it way wrong with the B&D.) Save time, try another brand, this one is not worth the money. How the mighty have fallen; it's really sad.

I purchased a Grasshog earlier this year as a replacement for an old electric trimmer. Out of the box it was easy to assemble and in a matter of minutes it was plugged in and running. Man, this thing is amazing! I don't have a huge yard but it certainly made light work of plowing through the weeds and grass. Used as an edger it also works great. For an inexpensive electric trimmer it's top notch. I highly recommend it!
